Iran-Israel tensions disrupt Trump’s G7 summit

US President Donald Trump has cut short his trip to the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada to return to Washington amid escalating conflicts between Israel and Iran.

Explosions were reported in Tehran shortly after Trump urged everyone to evacuate the Iranian capital immediately.

In Israel, sirens have sounded multiple times over the past few hours, although no major damage has been reported so far.

Trump has called a meeting of his National Security Council, but US officials emphasize that the United States is not participating in Israel’s offensive against Iran.

Limitations of Air Power

Israel claims it has full control of the skies over Tehran. Based on recent Israeli Air Force strikes on the Iranian capital, this seems mostly true.

Israeli jets have been using guided bombs at close range, so they don’t have to rely on long-range weapons like cruise missiles.

Iran’s small number of old fighter jets have not been a serious threat. Even before the recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites, Israel had already destroyed a large part of Iran’s air defense systems.

Last October, Israel targeted Iran’s long-range Russian-made S300 missile systems. In the latest attacks, Israel has focused on destroying radar and missile launchers.

However, Justin Bronk from the Royal United Services Institute says that while Israel has air superiority over Tehran, it does not have full air dominance.

Short-range air defenses, like portable ground-to-air missiles that Iran still possesses, could still pose a danger.

Similarly, in Yemen, US fighter jets gained air superiority over the Houthis, but the Houthis were still able to shoot down slower US drones.

Past military operations in the Middle East, such as US strikes on ISIS and Israel’s attacks on Hamas in Gaza, show the limits of air power.

Simply destroying targets from the air does not always lead to winning a conflict.

I really want to leave Iran as soon as possible” – A Teenager in Tehran

I spoke with TK, a high school student living in Tehran. She says she is very scared to even leave her apartment right now.

Over the past day and night, she has been hearing explosions all over the city. As night comes, the sounds of the blasts seem to get louder.

Like many people in Iran, she stays in constant touch with her family and friends to make sure they are safe.

“The main thing everyone talks about is how they can’t sleep,” TK says.

Despite the attacks, she is trying to focus on her college entrance exam, which is in two weeks. She has been preparing for this exam for years, but now it feels very uncertain.

“Of course, I really want to leave Iran as soon as possible,” she says. “But I don’t have enough money to do that.”

Jerusalem’s Old City remains calm after the recent retaliatory attacks.

Barriers have been set up at the steps leading to Damascus Gate, one of the main entrances to Jerusalem’s Old City.

An Israeli soldier at a border guard post is telling the few tourists trying to enter that everything inside is closed.

Beyond the next set of barriers at the large Damascus Gate arch, the normally busy maze of ancient alleys is strangely quiet.

On most days, you’d have to watch out for teenagers on scooters or carts pulled by shopkeepers, but today nearly all the shops are shut.

Only a few fruit stands, spice shops, and butcher stalls are open, and the usual lively atmosphere is missing.

Even the crowds of Muslim worshippers usually heading to Al Aqsa mosque are gone, as access has been temporarily closed for security reasons.

IDF Israel is continuing strikes on Iran – IDF

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claims to be carrying on airstrikes in targets within Iran.

The remarks accompanied a video that contained a footage of aerial strikes.

It arrives over 24 hours since the first attack by Israel on the military bases of Iran that resulted in the deaths of three Iranian military commanders, the IDF claimed.

Iran has since unleashed missile attacks on Israel up to Saturday morning

Trump’s backing of strikes puts him in a tough spot

When Israel attacked Iran last night, Secretary of State Marco Rubio quickly said it was Israel acting alone and tried to separate the Trump administration from it.

But now, Trump is supporting the attack more openly. He called it “excellent” and praised the “great American equipment” used.

The White House also said that American forces helped to stop some Iranian missiles.

This situation is tricky for Trump at home. Many Republicans and his supporters strongly back Israel. But some, especially in the Maga group, don’t like the idea of the US getting involved in more wars.

Trump has promised to end wars, not start new ones. He said he could stop the fighting in Ukraine quickly and wants to free all hostages in Gaza.

Today, he even suggested starting nuclear talks with Iran again, but Iran has refused.

In politics, it’s important to keep promises, and Trump might struggle to keep some of his big promises now.

People can abandon shelters, Israeli army says

People may exit secured areas in the country, but the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says they should be close to such areas.

The alert follows the instructions of the Israeli military, which earlier asked people to seek shelter until further notice because the army was working to intercept missiles fired by Iran.

It adds “You are asked to continue obeying the instructions of the Home Front Command.

The military claims that some of the “dozens” of missiles fired at Israel in the last hour by Iran were intercepted.

It says that the Search and Rescue forces are already working at several sites in the country where fallen projectiles were reported.

Iran warns of massive, devastating repercussions to Israel

This is a statement by the new leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), following the killing of his predecessor in the Israeli attacks last night.

Mohammad Pakpour declares that Israel will have a bitter and painful destiny with tremendous and devastating repercussions.

The statement further says that Iran will take revenge over those who were killed in the attack and continues to say that Israel is undermining the national security and territorial integrity of Iran.

Israeli assaults killed at least six nuclear researchers and a number of high-ranking Iranian military personnel.

Iranian threat has had a dramatic turn, says Israeli ambassador

A little more now specifically from the ambassador of Israel to the UN who is still providing an update on last night attacks on Iran.

According to Danny Danon, the Iranian threat has acquired a new dramatic twist in the past few months, he tells reporters because the nation has made huge progress in developing its nuclear program.

Danon alleges Iran has sufficient material to make several nuclear weapons. He notes that his nation also discovered that Iran had intended to ambush them and was going to “invade”.

Israel did this to defend our citizens, says ambassador.

We are not going to be silent as our people are targeted, again, and ever. IPC will not be able to deter Iran with empty words. Israel will.”

Israeli Strikes Are Reportedly Ongoing Across Iran.

In recent hours, Israel has continued conducting strikes throughout Iran as part of “Operation Rising Lion.”

In the northwestern city of Tabriz, a military airbase was targeted by Israel, according to a news outlet linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. The BBC has verified footage showing thick black smoke rising from the base.

There are also reports of a second round of Israeli strikes on Natanz—Iran’s primary facility for large-scale uranium enrichment—following an earlier attack this morning.

Natanz houses tens of thousands of centrifuges and plays a significant role in Iran’s production of highly enriched uranium.

These new attacks come just hours after Israel assassinated the leader of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, along with several other prominent military commanders and nuclear scientists.

Trump Demands Iran to Strike A Nuclear Deal Or Face Even More Ferocious Attacks

US President Donald Trump has called on Iran to strike a bargain on its nuclear programme stating that he had offered Tehran “chance after chance”

On Sunday, the US and Iran were to start the sixth round of negotiations on a deal.

According to Trump, writing on Truth Social, he had told them, using very strong language, to just do it, but they simply could not get it done, no matter how hard they tried, no matter how close they came.

Enough bloodshed and carnage have already resulted, he says, but there is yet time to bring this carnage, the next attacks on which are already planned to be still more atrocious, to a close.

Iran needs to negotiate, or soon there will be nothing to negotiate, and rescue what was once the Iranian Empire. Enough is enough, enough deaths, enough destruction, just Do it, Before it is to late.

Trump had earlier claimed he knew of the israel iran war intentions before they started attacking targets overnight, however, he clarified that the US military was not involved in the mission in any way.

Russia denounces ‘steep escalation’

We have now the initial Kremlin response to the Israeli attacks on Iran.

As the spokesman of Vladimir Putin Dmitry Peskov stated: “Russia is alarmed by and condemns the drastic worsening of the situation.”

He said President Putin is being briefed about the situation by the Russian defence ministry, foreign intelligence service and Russian foreign ministry.

Russia is an ally of israel iran war.

In February this year, the two presidents Putin and Pezeshkian signed a detailed strategic partnership between the two countries. However, the deal is not a formal military alliance or even the mutual military assistance commitments.

Indications Israel is planning more attacks in the coming days

According to Israel, Operation Rising Lion is just starting.

The strikes have hitherto not only been limited to components of the nuclear programme in Iran but also the air defence system.

This indicates that Israel is laying the foundation of more attacks in the ensuing days.

Israel claims it used 200 jets in the operation, however some accounts already indicate an already underground aspect akin to the recent drone strike by Ukraine against Russian airbases.

According to security sources, the explosive drones were smuggled into Iran by Israel spy agency, Mossad, (long before the Israeli attack).

It is suspected that the drones were utilized in striking surface-to-surface missile launchers that could potentially threaten Israel should an Iranian retaliation occur on a grand-scale.

Yet the drones Iran has deployed thus far today appear largely indicative – a shadow of last October major ballistic missile barrage launched by Tehran against Israel.

The retaliation by Israel, later that month, is thought to have struck at the air defences, missile and drone production of Iran, leaving it almost certainly more susceptible to further attack and diminishing its own capacity to retaliate.

Despite all its bellicose rhetoric, Iran is not what it used to be in terms of its capability to stage a direct military retaliation.

What Triggered Israel To Strike Iran – And Why At This Time

The rumors of an israel iran war against the nuclear installations in Iran have been going on years, but they went into overdrive in the past couple of days. Such an attack was impending according to the US media on Thursday.

Israel has expressed concerns that the US and Iran (which have been engaged in negotiations since April) could come up with a new nuclear deal that could allow Iran to have a nuclear programme – an idea that Israel has indicated it cannot tolerate under any circumstances.

It has threatened to mention nothing but an existential threat posed by the nuclear programme of Iran over the years. It has been a theme of Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu, going back to at least the mid-1990s.

Iran has constantly refused to be interested in nuclear weapons, saying that the nuclear programme is peaceful and contains only civilian applications.

The Western powers, and the international nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are not content that this is so. Thursday saw the IAEA vote – the first in 20 years – that declared Iran non-compliant with its nuclear duties.

Talking during the attacks became under way, Netanyahu stated that Iran had made sufficient material – theoretically – to make nine nuclear bombs, which was approximately in accord with a recent IAEA report. Iran, he added, posed a threat to the existence of Israel.

In attacking now, it appears that Israel is exploiting an opportunity: Iran is yet to re-establish air defences that were damaged in an Israeli raid in October – and an attack comes before the next round of nuclear negotiations that are planned to occur on Sunday.

The Supreme Leader Of Iran Says Israel Must Expect A Harsh Punishment

Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declares that Israel must expect a harsh retribution after overnight raids hit nuclear facilities and killed a number of military leaders.

He tells that Israel has staged a crime in their beloved nation today and his army would not allow them to get away with it.

By committting this crime, the Zionist regime has sealed upon itself a bitter, painful destiny, which it will most certainly bear witness to.

Since then, Iran has fired some 100 drones at Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

A defense expert suggests Iranian retaliation is a probable response

Shashank Joshi of The Economist, who holds the defence editor portfolio, tells Venture that the allegations by Israel that Iran has been increasing its activities related to weapons warrants extreme consideration.

Joshi says to the BBC Radio 4 Today programme that Israel carrying out overnight strikes will appear to many Iranians as attempting to destabilise the regime, rather than a scalpel-like surgical strike on nuclear facilities, when they wake up this morning.

He says he is looking at weeks of severe disturbance.

Here we are at the beginning of not only the Israeli campaign that will last several days to cause considerable destruction to Iranian facilities but also the Iranian revenge that is certain to happen.

Israel causes unprecedented damage to Iran’s elite.

The attack by Israel on Iran has not only been broader and more intense than the two previous military operations last year but it also seems to have borrowed some of the strategy that had been applied in the Israeli attack on Hezbollah in Lebanon last November.

Not just to strike Iran missile bases – and thereby its capability to retaliate with force – but also to carry out strikes to eliminate personnel in the leadership of Iran.

The result of that decapitation strategy against senior Hezbollah members was disastrous to the organization and its capacity to launch a viable counter-offensive.

Videos out of Tehran have depicted what appear to be targeted structures struck, akin to those in israel iran war strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, which ended with the slaying of the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah.

Iran does not seem to have killed anyone of such a large number. It has not targeted the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

To have struck and killed the military chief of staff of Iran, the commander of the powerful Revolutionary Guards and several of the country top nuclear scientists in the first hours of an operation – that the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted could last days – is to have caused an unprecedented amount of harm to the Iran elite.

That would appear to require an even more intense reaction on the part of Iran than it had in its two attacks on Israel last year. But it can also ensure that the capability of Tehran to muster such a reaction becomes all the more difficult.

That is apparently the calculation that Netanyahu made when he decided on this escalation of the conflict.

Israelis are buying food and water in preparation of retaliation

In Jerusalem, supermarket shelves are quickly emptying as people buy food and water in large quantities.

The emergency services in Israel announcement and some hospitals announcement that they are mobilising-blood services throughout the country, and at the same time, discharging patients who are well enough to be discharged as hospitals.

All the cities of the Palestinians in the West Bank have been placed under lockdown until further notice.

This is in build up to a revenge – as the Israeli military says 100 Iranian drones are heading to Israel.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy also urges restraint as he echoes Starmer by stating that a further escalation is a “real danger to peace and stability in the region”.

The world depends on the Middle East stability. It is a perilous situation and I would appeal to all sides to exercise restraint.”

Israel Strikes Iran’s Nuclear Sites, Killing Top Commander Tensions Rise with Warnings of Retaliation

Israel’s President Benjamin Netanyahu said these strikes were a “planned military operation” to stop the threat Iran poses to israel iran war. He warned that if Iran isn’t stopped, it could make a nuclear weapon very soon.

Israel has declared a state of emergency, and more attacks might happen soon in response.

A spokesperson for Iran’s military said both the US and Israel will face serious consequences because of these attacks.

Iran has not experienced military actions this large on its own land since the Iran-Iraq War

Flights to Iran and even to its neighbouring state Iraq are being cancelled, one by one, as seen on the flight information board of the Qatar Airport.

Iran has officially shut its airspace after unprecedented spate of Israeli attacks.

But it seems most airlines are also shunning Iraq because of increased security issues.

The Iranian and Iraqi paramilitary units linked to Tehran have threatened more than once that any assault on Iran – by Israel or the United States – would result in American interests and bases in the region, and especially in Iraq, being legitimate targets.

Last night I was talking to an adviser to the Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and he said that the government has been holding intense negotiations with the Iran-backed groups to convince them not to retaliate in case Iran is attacked as Baghdad does not want to be dragged into another war.

Another foreign policy adviser to Sudani had also cautioned me earlier on that in case anything happened to Iran, “It will not be something we had seen earlier on.”

He was correct. Now, despite the tit-for-tat action between israel iran war that we have witnessed in the past, Iran has never witnessed such military activities on its territory since the Iran-Iraq War.

This most recent attack occurs only two days ahead of the sixth round of Iran-US negotiations, which were to start this Sunday in Muscat – and to which I am now flying. However, now, there is a big question mark.

There is even doubt on whether the talks will take place. And it is more difficult than ever to guess what is already waiting with the region.
